Application [Video Lesson]

Heat exchangers are used onboard to heat or cool process fluids. Heat transfer is achieved by circulating the fluids in adjacent spaces in the heat exchanger.

In a heat exchanger transfer of heat takes place between fluids, from a higher temperature fluid to a lower temperature fluid. The performance of the heat exchanger should be optimum for the efficient running of the main engine, generators, and other auxiliary machinery.

Application

Propulsion Plant:

The main propulsion plant consists of different subsystems for running the main engine like the lube oil system, jacket water system (open or closed system), fuel system, etc. Heat exchangers normally used in the main propulsion system are – Shell and tube type and plate type heat exchangers.

Auxiliary Power Generation System:

The auxiliary power generation system is similar to the main propulsion system, except that the power is generated in terms of output. Shell and tube type, plate type, and plate-fin type heat exchangers are generally used.

Starting Air System:

High-pressure air is produced in the compressor which is further cooled in an intercooler, which acts as a heat exchanger. A shell and tube type exchanger is popularly used for this purpose.

Fuel injection system:

For proper atomization, fuel is heated up in a heater with a heating medium as steam. Shell and tube-type heater is used for this purpose. Also, for reducing Sox emission from the propulsion plant, combustible fuel is mixed with a spray of water, for this direct contact heat exchanger is used.

Refrigeration System:

In the refrigeration system, for the meat room, fish room, and vegetable room, the evaporator acts as a phase change heat exchanger. A shell and tube-type unit is used for the condenser unit in the refrigeration system.

A.C system:

For maintaining the temperature, the phase change heat exchanger unit is installed as an evaporator.  The condenser unit is normally a shell and tube-type exchanger.

Fresh Water System:

For generating freshwater, a seawater condenser and jacket water evaporator is used. Both are types of heat exchangers. Shell and tube type and plate type heat exchangers are normally used for this.

Steam Turbine Unit:

If a ship consists of a steam turbine or turbine generator, normally spiral heat exchanger is used for heat transfer. Apart from the above-mentioned places, there are several other applications where heat exchangers are effectively used for the smooth running of the ship.
