Ship cranes are used in many ways and depend on the ship types and cargo to be transported. A small barge can have a single deck crane and a large bulk carrier can be installed with multiple cargo cranes (4-5 deck cranes).

The crane capacities on cargo ships are normally between 5 and 100 tons with a working radius from 20 to 40 meters. The deck cranes are used to lift the general and specialized cargo, on a heavy lifting vessel for high tonnage cargo, for lifting provisions, container lifting, and small capacity cranes for lifting pipes (bunkering) and gangways.

The cranes can be installed on eccentric platforms to increase outreach and performance.
