Video Lesson 1

The IMO Green House Gas (GHG) reduction strategy was introduced under MARPOL Annex VI, which –

  • specifically addresses the air pollution from ships – measures to reduce and control them
  • entered into force on 19 May 2005

For reducing the carbon emission from ships, EEDI, EEXI and different stages of SEEMPs are introduced to improve the energy efficiency measures taken by the ship.

For measuring the carbon emission – The CII is introduced to check how efficiently the ships transport goods or passengers. Its value is given in grams of CO2 emitted per cargo-carrying capacity and nautical mile.
