The abandon ship is an emergency procedure where all personnel on board a ship evacuate and leave the vessel due to a serious threat to their safety or the ship’s integrity. This could be caused by fire, flooding, collision, or any other critical event that poses a significant danger to the ship or its crew.
The signal for the abandoned ship is given verbally by the master to the station in charge of the crew on the ship’s Personal Addressing (PA) system.
Seven short blasts and one prolonged blast on the ship’s whistle and the same signal on the general alarm bell is used as an abandon ship alarm or sound signal onboard the ship.
However, the alarm sounded is similar to a general alarm; and everybody comes to the emergency muster station where the master or his/her substitute (Chief Officer) gives a verbal order to abandon the ship.
