What is Transverse Thrust?

Transverse thrust is a hydrodynamic force generated by a propeller on a ship that acts in a direction perpendicular to the ship’s longitudinal axis.

When a propeller rotates, it produces a swirling flow of water behind it, creating a pressure difference between the sides of the propeller. This pressure difference generates a force that acts transversely, causing the ship to move sideways.


The magnitude and direction of the transverse thrust depend on various factors, such as the propeller’s rotation rate, diameter, pitch, and the ship’s speed and hull shape.

The presence of transverse thrust can affect a ship’s maneuverability and stability, and it needs to be considered in the design and operation of ships.
